Shirley Qian
GIS Specialist

Capital Corridor Join Powers Authority
Shirley is working with the Capitol Corridor Joint Powers Authority, which administers and manages the Capitol Corridor train route that runs from Auburn to San Jose. At Capital Corridor, Shirley is using GIS to analyze the vulnerabilities of the Capitol Corridor stations and rail tracks to sea level rise. Throughout her fellowship, Shirley will work with professionals from various organizations around the Bay Area, including the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission and the Bay Area Rapid Transit District.

“I feel truly blessed to be able to work in an organizational environment that is so considerate of sea level rise planning. Everyone that I've come into contact with acknowledges the need for more considerations of climate change and sea level rise impacts in the transportation planning sector. I'm excited to contribute directly to a sea level rise adaptation plan while improving my GIS skills and networking with a wide range of planning professionals in the Bay Area," says Shirley.

Elliot Goldstein
Climate Associate
Alameda County GSA

As a Climate Associate, Elliot is working to support Alameda County’s cross-agency climate action teams as they research, develop and roll out new policies and programs to reduce the climate impacts of the County operations. Elliot’s ability to create positive change and his understanding of the interconnections of society and the environment through his studies and extracurriculars at Cal will serve him well in this role.

Elliot has been busy since joining CCBA. Over the past month he has trained with the GSA’s Sustainability Team, participated in a Waste and Refuge tour and Transportation Tour, lead a Go Green Portal Raffle for over 300 employees, been appointed to the Berkeley Community Environmental Advisory Commission, and has worked with three green initiative teams in the county: Clean Commuter Benefit Team, Virtual Meeting Team, and Metrics Team.

"Climate action in the United States is currently happening at the local levels, and the Alameda County government is making an effort to lead by example. I'm learning a tremendous amount about the opportunities and challenges of being a change agent in large organizations." says Elliot.

Salote Soqo
Climate and Carbon Management Fellow
Carbon Cycle Institute

Salote brings her professional experience in environmental education, impact assessments, and research on climate change adaptation to the Carbon Cycle Institute's Marin Carbon Project, a collaborative research project between UC Berkeley, MALT, UC Davis, UC Extension, NRCD, USDA NRCS & the Nicasio Native Grass Ranch.

Salote is working on projects ranging from carbon management through compost application on rangelands and in urban agricultural soils to the impacts of climate change on Bay Area communities, focusing particularly disadvantaged communities and communities of color in the San Francisco Bay Area. During her first week, Salote visited two farm sites that are participating in research that demonstrates carbon can be sequestered on local rangelands through compost application and proper grazing management.

“This fellowship provides an exciting opportunity to learn and understand the various mechanisms by which environmental and climate change issues are being addressed by and through the various governance levels that exist in the State,” says Salote.

CCBA News and Events

CCBA Turns Four!
We kicked our fourth fellowship class with our week-long Climate Corps training in October. Our fellows represent a diverse community of talent, leadership, and emerging sustainability professionals. They will be working with government agencies, non profit and for profit organizations throughout the Bay Area and the Sierra Nevada. We look forward to what will be an amazing year of sustainability project implementation, community engagement, and resource conservation.

C2C Leadership Workshop
Last weekend Climate Corps Bay Area partnered with Bard Center for Environmental Policy and UC Berkeley to bring Bard's C2C Leadership Workshop to our fellows. During this three day training our fellows practiced public speaking and messaging, networked with sustainability professionals, learned the keys to fundraising, and brainstormed ideas for a sustainable future. Thank you to Jess Scott and Eban Goodstein of Bard College, Katherine Walsh of UC Berkeley, and our volunteers for making this event possible.

The Next Big Thing in the Energy Sector: Photovoltaic Generated DC Electricity
A viable solution to the energy problem is the onsite generation of electricity using the PV method of converting solar energy directly into electrical energy.

Global Warming Led to Dwarfism in Mammals -- Twice
Mammal body size decreased significantly during at least two ancient global warming events. A new finding that suggests a similar outcome is possible in response to human-caused climate change.

A new study adds support to the idea that the oceans are taking up some of the excess heat, at least for the moment.

Meet Steve

CCBA has a new Program Director!  Stephen Miller, Deputy Director at Strategic Energy Innovations, has taken on management of the program from Kif Scheuer, who transitioned out of SEI over recent weeks.  According to Steve: "I'm excited to join the program at the start of this fellowship year.  It's rare that I get the chance to take on an innovate program like Climate Corps at such a promising juncture.  I'm thankful for the opportunity to work with my team at SEI, our impressive cohort of fellows and our community partners, as we collectively drive towards relevant and needed climate related outcomes for the region."  For the past 8 years, Steve led SEI's partnership with the Alliance to Save Energy on the California PowerSave Campus program, managing teams of undergraduates and graduate students to vision and implement resource efficiency projects and campaigns on their respective campuses.  In addition to leading a host of campus and municipal sustainability programs at SEI, Steve previously worked on clean energy initiatives for the U.S. Department of Energy and for a Fortune 500 Electric and Gas Utility on the East Coast.  Steve's work reflects his passion for sustainable communities, energy solutions, and for a trained and productive green workforce.
